Language development is critically important for a child's understanding of the world and self-expression. Every child develops at their own pace, but there are expected skills at certain stages.

Stages of Language Development

0-6 Months - Responding to sounds - Smiling - Cooing - Distinguishing tone of voice

6-12 Months - Babbling (ba-ba, ma-ma) - Responding to name - Understanding simple words - Using gestures

12-18 Months - First words - Understanding simple instructions - Pointing - 10-20 words

18-24 Months - Vocabulary explosion - Two-word combinations - 50+ words - Understanding simple questions

2-3 Years - Forming sentences - Starting conversations - Listening to stories - Asking questions

Supporting Language Development

Daily Interactions - Talking to baby - Reading books - Singing songs - Narrating during play

Responding - Responding to the child's vocalizations - Expanding what they say - Asking questions - Active listening

When Should You Be Concerned?
